A misdemeanor is a crime punishable by a fine and carries a maximum penalty of a year in the county jail. While misdemeanors are much less serious than felonies, a non-citizen conviction of a misdemeanor could lead to deportation and denial of citizenship or naturalization.

The most common misdemeanor charge is DUI/OWI (Driving Under the Influence/Operating While Intoxicated). Other examples of misdemeanors include domestic violence, assault and battery, pandering (soliciting a prostitute), indecent exposure, and possession of a small amount of drugs.
